My understanding is as follows:

a) Groove client only - clients can find each other on a LAN or through the MS hosted Groove Public Directory which is free. Data is sent peer to peer, so both clients must be online at the same time in order to exchange data. However, if you have a team of several people all sharing the same workspace, the other members of the team will effectively act as relay points. For example, if userA makes a change it will be sent to UserC, but not UserB because they are offline. Now when UserB comes back online, either UserA or UserC can send them the change (assuming at least one is online also).

b) Groove server - if the other user(s) in a workspace are offline when the change is made, it will be sent to the relay server in Groove server which will store the change and forward it to the other user(s) when they come back online. This is a seperate product that you have to pay for and host (or you can get the hosted version). It also includes other central administration and data integration features beyond the relay server capability.

Can someone explain to a non-IT person just exactly how Groove works? What I mean by that is that I can't get a sense of the server issue. Do we as a small company have to have a server to synch with associates scattered across the globe? Or does Microsoft provide the server? If we have to provide the server, is there additional software that has to be bought?

Is there an actual person to talk to about Groove? Any customer support?
